Mika Shiotani Exhibition

We will hold an exhibition for Mika Shiotani at amanai from April 19, 2025. The exhibition will feature everyday tools made from trees, such as tableware and cutlery.
Based in Shonan she works with a variety of woods, but is currently devoted to creating works made from green wood. Green wood is wood that is full of moisture and has just been cut down. Unlike lumber, green wood contains a lot of moisture, so its weight and shape are not stable during the drying process. As a result, it can deform in unexpected directions during processing. While making use of such shapes, she also adds design accents by leaving the knots and bark. For this reason, most of her works are one-of-a-kind.
She says that she often gets wood from people who participate in activities to maintain Satoyama. As a result, she has started to use green wood, but if she comes across a good lumber, she says that she doesn't care about the origin of the wood, and can use lumber, dried timber, etc.
For her, an avid wood lover, woodworking is "like a language." She aims to create things that can serve as communication tools that can share and convey feelings, and connect people, environments, and things.
Please come and enjoy these light-hearted works, which will leave you feeling as if you are having a conversation with the woods.
