The soft shadows on the surface of this edgy circular plate are reminiscent of a water basin. This Kamakura-bori was created through a collaboration between TOKIWAGI designer Yumi Terauchi and Goto Hisayoshi, the 29th generation descendant of a Kamakura Buddhist sculptor whose ancestor was Unkei.
"Kamakura-bori" is a lacquered craft that has been taken over from the Kamakura period to the present, and it has now become a traditional Japanese craft "Kougei".
Using domestic solid Katsura wood and domestic lacquer, the undulating surface has been painstakingly carved with a finely sharpened carving knife to create a gentle expression that resembles the surface of a tranquil lake.
The "small" size is approximately 16cm in diameter and can be used as a small plate for Japanese sweets or as an appetizer for kaiseki cuisine. The "large" size is 24cm and can be used as a confectionery dish. It is wrapped in turmeric cloth and stored in a paulownia box.
